Me 12 months ago: “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to be awesome, just watch.”
People 12 months ago: “Yeah right. It’s gonna FLOP, Ben Affleck will never be convincing as Batman, Man of Steel was such a TERRIBLE movie, and a sequel will only drive the DC Cinematic Universe deeper in the ground.”
(*skip forward to this afternoon, Warner Bros.’ San Diego Comic-Con panel, and the new trailer below*)
The Entire World Now: “OMGOSH OMGOSH OMGOSH THIS IS GONNA BE AMAZING–SHUT UP AND TAKE OUR MONEY!”
Did anyone listen to me a year ago? Noooooooo. Was anyone willing to give Zack Snyder and Company the benefit of the doubt? Noooooooo. Did anyone think, “You know, the sequel may tie up some of those loose ends in Man of Steel regarding all that awful destruction?” Noooooooo. Did anyone say “Hey, let’s give Ben Affleck a chance as Batman, he might actually be good once we see some footage?” NOOOOOOOOO.
I won’t hold it against the former skeptics, of course. I welcome them into the fold with open arms. But that doesn’t mean I won’t hold it over their heads just a wee little bit 😉 😉 😉
The trailer is amazing. Probably one of the best trailers I’ve ever seen–and I know I’ll be called out as biased, but it is really well-done. I’ve been reunited with Clark Kent and Lois Lane (my OTP!!! *loud squealing*) and Martha Kent, my favorite Movie Mom–but I’ve also met the newest incarnation of Batman and I am totally sold. (I mean, I had faith in the casting of Ben Affleck a long time ago but did anyone listen to me? Nooooooooo…)
And I’ve also seen Wonder Woman, AKA Diana Prince, in action FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE. Because I haven’t seen anything of the old TV show and that’s pretty much the only live-action Wonder Woman that has ever existed before now. And she is GORGEOUS. Her costume is such an improvement over the highly-sexualized comic book version. Here’s hoping she gives Marvel a run for their money–and before anyone jumps all over me, all I mean by that is this: I hope Wonder Woman’s amazingness forces Marvel to give us that Black Widow movie we’ve been clamoring for. Can I get an amen?
Watch the trailer and let me know what you think. My biggest objection is my usual objection to Superman stories: I don’t like the subtle deifying of Superman’s character, although I will forever maintain that the last thing he wants is for people to worship him. That said, I am sooooooo looking forward to this movie.
Just like I’ve been looking forward to it since I first watched Man of Steel.
Just like everybody in the world has been looking forward to i–oh wait.
